Rubbish & Recycling Collection Information

Garbage is collected for the Borough of Rosslyln Farms by Allied Waste Services of Pittsburgh. All rubbish for the Borough will be collected on WEDNESDAY. Please make sure it is at the curb by 6:00 a.m. for collection.   • Garbage should be in properly secured containers or plastic bags.
  • Grass clippings and weeds should be in plastic bags.
  • Hedge cutting, limbs and branches should be securely tied and should not exceed 48 inches in length; branches should not exceed 3" (three inches) in diameter.
  • Newspapers and magazines should be securely tied in bundles.
  • All furniture items (only one (1) item a week will be collected), applances, household goods and disassembled children's swing sets will be accepted at curbside.
  • Carpet should be rolled and tied in legths not to exceed 48 inches.
  • Empty paint cans and/or dried paint is acceptable. Paint can be dried by air drying or soaking up with newspaper or kitty litter. Lids should be left off.


  • Building materials (these may be picked up for a fee by calling Allied Waste Services at 412-429-2600).
  • Automobile parts including wheel rims.
  • Trees and branches over 3" (three inches) in diameter.
  • Ashes from furnaces and fireplaces.
  • Stones and dirt.
  • Leaves (Rosslyn Farms provides compost pickup).
  • Tires.
  • Liquid paint.

For 2011, trash and recycling collection will be delayed by one day on the weeks following Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day.


All recycling for the Borough of Rosslyn Farms will be collected on the designated WEDNESDAY listed below. The following recyclables should be placed inside the container provided by the Borough. No plastic bags can be used.


  1. GLASS - Brown, green and clear glass, food and beverage bottles and jars. No window glass, dishes, light bulbs. Rinse out glass and remove lids and metal or plastic rings. Glass must be unbroken. Remove as must of the label as possible.
  2. PLASTIC - PETE containers, indicated by a recycling symbol with an enclosed number one (on bottom of container), including soda bottles, salad dressing bottles, etc. HDPE containers indicated by recycling symbol with an enclosed number two, including one gallon plastic milk and detergent bottles. Rinse out containers and remove lids and metal or plastic rings. May be crushed to save space.
  3. BI-METAL AND STEEL CANS - Food and juice cans. Rinse cans. Ends may be removed and placed in cans. Cans should be flattened to save space. Remove as much of label as possible. Aluminum beverage cans should be rinsed out and crushed to save space. Aerosol and paint cans are not recyclable.
  4. NEWSPRINT - Newpapers and magazines are to be placed "loosely" in paper bage, cardboard boxes or containers labels newsprint and must be placed separately from commingled recyclables. Bundled newsprint or plastic bags will not be accepted.

These items cannot be recycled and should be included in your trash:
Garbage, food waste, diapers, paper plates, meat or dairy plastic or paper packaging, wax paper, plastic wrap, plastic bags, plastic wrapping film, freezer food packaging, plastic deli take-out packaging or plastic utensils, formed or pellet styrofoam packaging, window glass, ceramics, dishware, mirrors, light bulbs.

If your scheduled recycling pick-up is on or after a holiday, pick-up will be one day later for the remainder of the week.

Appliances containing refrigerant:
NOTE: Items such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditions, dehumidifiers, water coolers, or any other appliance containing refrigerant will ONLY be picked up if the item has a sticker certifying the refrigerant has been removed. If there is no sticker certifying refrigerant removal, the item will not be collected due to law prohibiting disposal without certification. It is suggested that you have the company delivering the new appliance dispose of the old appliance to same on the removal cost of the refrigerant.
